Ajita Sharma - Pillars of Life

Understanding the pillars of life is essential for creating a balanced and fulfilling existence. Each pillar represents a fundamental aspect that supports overall well-being. In this blog, we will explore five key pillars that form the foundation of a satisfying life.

When it comes to life advice, we’ve all heard the same clichés: set goals, stay positive, and keep pushing forward. But what if there’s more to life than the usual pillars of success? What if the traditional advice doesn’t cover everything we need to truly thrive?

Let’s talk about the Five Pillars of Life, that are often overlooked but are basic to living a fulfilling and meaningful life. They might just be the game-changers you’ve been looking for.

The Pillar of Vulnerability

“Existence precedes essence”

Why Vulnerability Matters?

Vulnerability isn’t about being weak. It’s about being brave enough to be open. In a world where strength is often equated with silence and stoicism, vulnerability is the true test of courage. But why is it important? Psychologically speaking, when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we create deeper connections with others. This leads to greater emotional support, understanding, and a sense of belonging.

Jean-Paul Sartre said, “Existence precedes essence.” Our existence, marked by our interactions and relationships, is what defines us. When we’re vulnerable, we allow others to see us as we truly are, which can lead to more authentic and meaningful connections.

Think about a time when you shared something personal with a friend. It could have been a fear, a dream, or even a past mistake. How did that affect your relationship? Chances are, it brought you closer because you were being real. That’s the power of vulnerability.

When was the last time you let your guard down? How did it feel?

The key is to start small. Share something personal with someone you trust. It doesn’t have to be earth-shattering, just something real. Notice how it affects your relationship.

The Pillar of Curiosity

“The unexamined life is not worth living.”

Why Curiosity Matters?

Curiosity is often underestimated. It’s not just about asking questions but about maintaining a mindset that seeks to understand and explore. Psychologically, curiosity stimulates the brain, keeping it active and engaged. This is a necessity for our mental health and personal growth.

Socrates famously said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Curiosity drives us to examine life, question our assumptions, and grow beyond our current limitations.

Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist who is known for his insatiable curiosity. Feynman’s relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to explore a wide array of topics, from quantum mechanics to bongo drumming. His curiosity not only fueled his scientific discoveries but also enriched his life experiences.

What are you curious about but haven’t explored yet?

It’s time for you to pick that one thing you’ve always wondered about. Spend 30 minutes today researching or trying it out. Curiosity doesn’t just open doors; it builds new ones.

The Pillar of Adaptability

“You cannot step into the same river twice, for other waters are continually flowing on.”

Why Adaptability Matters?

Change is the only constant in life, and those who adapt, thrive. Adaptability isn’t just about survival; it’s about flourishing in new environments and circumstances. Psychologically, being adaptable means you’re less likely to experience stress and more likely to find creative solutions to problems.

Heraclitus, a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher, said, “You cannot step into the same river twice, for other waters are continually flowing on.” This reminds us that change is inevitable, and adaptability is key to navigating it.

Think about Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. It wasn’t the strongest species that survived, but those most adaptable to change. Darwin himself exemplified adaptability, changing his views and theories as new evidence came to light, leading to groundbreaking scientific advancements.

Ask yourself – How do you handle unexpected changes?

All you need to do is try a new way of doing something simple, like taking a different route to work or changing your workout routine. Start with the small changes to prepare for the big ones.

The Pillar of Resilience

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Why Resilience Matters?

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, and it’s essential for long-term success and happiness. Resilience helps us manage stress, recover from trauma, and maintain a positive outlook on life.

Marcus Aurelius believed in the power of resilience. He famously said, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” In other words, obstacles aren’t just things to overcome; they are integral to the journey of growth.

What challenges have you faced recently, and how did you handle them?

You too can build resilience by setting small, achievable challenges for yourself. Overcoming these will boost your confidence and prepare you for bigger obstacles. It’s not about avoiding difficulty but embracing and growing from it.

The Pillar of Contribution

Why Contribution Matters?

Contribution isn’t just about charity or giving back. It’s about recognizing your role in the larger community and taking action to make a positive impact. Psychologically, contributing to something bigger than yourself gives your life purpose and enhances your sense of fulfillment.

Aristotle spoke of Eudaimonia, often translated as “flourishing” or “the good life.” He believed that true happiness comes from living a life of virtue and contributing to the well-being of others.

Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. She used her education and leadership skills to start the Green Belt Movement, which empowered women and promoted environmental conservation in Kenya. Her contribution was a direct result of identifying a need in her community and using her strengths to address it.

Now you think – What unique strengths do you have, and how can you use them to contribute to your community?

Identify just one strength you possess and find a way to apply it in service to others. Whether it’s mentoring, volunteering, or simply offering your expertise, making a contribution will enhance both your life and the lives of those around you.

Building Your Pillars

These five pillars—Vulnerability, Curiosity, Adaptability, Resilience, and Contribution— require you to go beyond surface-level solutions and dig deeper into what truly makes life meaningful.

Now It’s Your Turn

Which of these pillars do you need to strengthen? Start today by taking small steps toward incorporating these overlooked but essential elements into your life. The journey might be challenging, but the rewards will be worth it.
